First days
- Make sure everyone is safe and get medical care if needed
- Notify your insurer promptly and write down your claim number
- Ask for a complete, certified copy of your policy, including endorsements
- Request an advance for living expenses if you are displaced
- Photograph and video the damage when it is safe to do so
First weeks
- Keep a claim diary: dates, names, what was said
- Save every receipt (housing, meals, mileage, clothing, toiletries)
- Start a contents list room by room, using photos, videos and purchase history
- Get your own contractor bids. Don’t rely only on the insurer’s estimate
- Ask for important decisions and explanations in writing
Before you sign anything
- Read releases and “final payment” letters carefully
- Don’t give a recorded statement or examination under oath without understanding your rights
- Have a lawyer review the offer if it seems low. The review is free
