Contents claims and underinsured homes

Listing everything you owned is exhausting. Insurers count on that, and on depreciation, to keep contents payments low.

Contents claims

Replacement cost policies generally pay depreciated value first and the rest once items are replaced, subject to the policy and the law. Disputes arise over depreciation rates, item values and whether an itemized list is required in every case. We help clients organize inventories and push back on unsupported reductions.

Underinsurance

Many homeowners learn after a fire that their dwelling limit won't cover today's rebuild cost. Some policies include extended replacement cost or inflation protection. Sometimes the problem goes back to how the coverage was calculated. We look at both.

Questions we hear

Do I need receipts for everything?

Usually not. Photos, videos, bank and card records, online order history and memory-based lists can all support a contents claim.

Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Results described on this site are examples of past matters and do not predict or guarantee the result of any future case. Every case is different and depends on its own facts and the law. Amounts shown are gross recoveries, before attorney’s fees and costs. Where shown, “carrier first offered/paid” is what the insurer had offered or paid before the client retained counsel. Client names and identifying details are omitted.
